rimta5 error

Summarises what we know about the rimta5.exe error

Symptoms

We have seen this error in a few scenarios.

1. Importing data into RiSOLVE, a customer saw the following errors during scan conversion:

Convert scan xxx (ScanPos002) - RiMTA5: <357> No valid local license found
Convert scan xxx (ScanPos002) - Failed! Error: rimta5.exe returned code 6 (0x6)
Scan "xxx": Database file "<filepath>.rdbx" does not exist or is corrupt!

2. Converting a scan with RiSCAN PRO, the error is seen in a different form with reference to a missing license:

Convert scan xxx - RiMTA5: <201> Dongle not found.
Convert scan xxx - Failed! Error: rimta5.exe returned code 6 (0x6)
Automatic Registration 2... - Failed! Error: Automatic Registration 2 is not licensed.

Solutions

There are a few different reasons on what might be causing this issue. Here is what you can do:

  1. Go to your RiSCAN PRO installation directory (usually C:\Program Files\Riegl_LMS\RiSCAN_PRO), right click the RiSCAN_PRO.exe and click "Properties".
  2. On the "Digital Signatures" Tab click on the "RIEGL Laser Measurements Systems..." signature and then click "Details".
  3. Check if it reads "This digital signature is OK." (see screenshot).

If it reads "This digital signature is OK." then go back to RiSCAN PRO and run the import again as before. You shouldn't get this particular error any more and the problem is fixed.
The reason why it works now is because opening the "Digital Signatures Details" dialog causes Windows to connect to the Internet and update it's Digital Certificate database.

If the "Digital Signatures" tab is missing or reads that the signature is "Not OK" then this can have the following reasons:

  1. Your computer could not connect to the Internet to update it's Digital Certificate database. If this is the case then please ensure a one time Internet connection to allow it to update its database and check the signature again if it reads "Ok" this time.
  2. Your RiSCAN_PRO.exe is broken. If this is the case then please reinstall RiSCAN PRO and check if the signature now reads "Ok".

If the Computer has an Internet connection and the re-installation of RiSCAN PRO did not fix the signature to read "Ok" then please send us your "RiSCAN_PRO.exe" as well as your "SetupRiSCAN_PRO_64_bit_2.19.exe" so that we can check if it is indeed broken.
Please let us know if you need an FTP Link to upload your data to and we will send you one.

What if an internet connection is not possible?

There is a way to transfer the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" from one PC over to another.

Here are the steps:

Use a computer with an Internet connection where the RiSCAN PRO 2.19 Certificate is Ok:

  1. Press "Windows + R" to bring up the run dialog. Enter "certmgr.msc" and click "Ok".
  2. In certmgr expand "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" and click "Certificates".
  3. Select all certificates from the list, right click "All Tasks - Export...".
  4. Select "Personal Information Exchange (.PFX)" as the Export File Format. Click Next and enter a "Password".
  5. Click next and enter a filename e.g.: "Trusted Root Certification Authorities.pfx". Click Next, then Finish to export the file.
  6. Transfer the exported "Trusted Root Certification Authorities.pfx" over to the Computer with no Internet connection.

On the Computer with no internet connection:

  1. Double click the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities.pfx" to launch the "Certificate Import Wizard".
  2. Set the "Store Location" to "Local Machine" and click "Next".
  3. Confirm the "File to Import" and click Next.
  4. Enter the "Password" and click "Next".
  5. Choose "Automatically select the certificate store" and click "Next" then "Finish" the Import.
  6. Make sure that the Digital Signature of RiSCAN PRO 2.19 is now OK.

If this does not fix the problem, help from the IT department will be needed, who should be able to troubleshoot using the information above.
