Migrating a Single User License (SUL) to a Single Instance License (SIL)

RIEGL previously issued Single User Licenses (SUL), but due to recent changes, this licence type is no longer available. These licenses have therefore been moved onto a Single Instance License (SIL). This article explains the differences and how to use the new SIL.

NOTE: The article refers to RiSOLVE, but the same steps are also applicable to RiSCAN PRO.

When using the original SUL, you will have been used to one of two scenarios:

  1. The dongle has been plugged into a user’s PC with associated .lic licence file imported into RiSOLVE. This dongle has stayed in this PC permanently.
  2. The dongle has been used in differing user’s PCs with an associated .lic file imported into each PCs RiSOLVE. Only one PC can be used at a time. Wherever the dongle is placed, RiSOLVE will be active providing the .lic is imported also.

Going forward with the new SIL, please consider the following points related to the scenarios above:

  1. The dongle has been plugged into a user’s PC with associated .lic licence file imported into RiSOLVE. This dongle has stayed in this PC permanently.

This is still the case, however, if that user updates (changes) their PC, please be aware that now, when you move that dongle to another PC, you need to also migrate an associated .dat file as well as the dongle and the .lic licence file. See section MIGRATION of the LicenseServer manual (pdf).
  2. The dongle has been used in differing user’s PCs with an associated .lic file imported into each PCs RiSOLVE. Only one PC can be used at a time. Wherever the dongle is placed, RiSOLVE will be active providing the .lic is imported also.

Typically, this is no longer done in this way. There are now 3 different ways that you can use this licence on multiple PCs.
    1. MIGRATION: Move the Dongle, .dat and .lic to another PC as per point 1a (not recommended)
    2. CHECK-OUT: Use a check-out dongle to allow the licence to temporarily be used on a  different PC for up to 28 days
    3. NETWORK: If a robust LAN is in operation, up to 5 users can use their PCs (Client) and access the licence held on a central PC (Server). One of those users can be operating RiSOLVE on the Server PC. All 5 users can be in operation simultaneously.
NOTE: VPN is not officially supported, but some customers are using this method.

DELIVERY

You will receive a metal box containing:

  • The SIL dongle. Please consider this to be the ‘master’ (or Server) dongle. It is labelled Snnnn and will always be in a PC.
  • A Check-out dongle (nnnn) will only be used if you choose to temporarily move (or borrow) a
    licence from the master PC.
NOTE: Your existing dongle can be retained and used as a 2nd check out dongle, or it can be returned to us.
  • A standard USB stick which contains your .lic (licence) file, and the latest software that was
available at the time of shipping.
NOTE: Due to time in shipment, it is possible that newer software maybe available. This can always be accessed, checked and downloaded at http://www.riegl.com/members-area/software-downloads/terrestrial-scanning/ (prior registration signup required).

INSTALLATION

Decide which PC will be the ‘master’ (Server). This is likely to be the PC of the main user of the software but could also be a dedicated server if you are setting up as a network licence.

NOTE: if this is a dedicated office server, RIEGL LicenceServer can be downloaded from our Members page as a standalone utility.

RIEGL LicenseServer must be installed on this PC/Server ONLY. Before Install, please check that RIEGL LicenceProxy has been uninstalled or at least deactivated. This can be done by:

  • Open the "Services" App (search for "Services" App in the Windows start menu) on the PC
    acting as License-Server
  • Double-click "RIEGL LicenseProxy". Note it will not be present if successfully uninstalled
  • Hit the "Stop" button
  • Set "Startup type" to "Manual" so it won't start automatically on next restart
  • Click "Ok"

Assuming the PC will run RiSOLVE also, please run the RiSOLVE installer as provided (or downloaded), as follows:

  • On the Welcome page click NEXT
  • Agree the Licence by clicking I AGREE
  • Now on the Choose Components page, scroll down to ensure LicenseProxy is DESELECTED and LicenceServer is SELECTED. Click NEXT
  • Select the .lic licence file which has been provided on the USB stick, click NEXT
  • Verify the Install Location, then click INSTALL
  • Follow through the instructions presented thereafter. Please take note of any instructions
given to the dongle being plugged in or removed
  • It is now recommended to re-start the PC (if practical)
  • Ensure the dongle is plugged in if not already
  • Launch RiSOLVE.

If RiSOLVE is to be used on other PCs (Clients) either licenced via the LAN or by using a check-out dongle, repeat the above process BUT ensure LicenceProxy is SELECTED and LicenceServer DESELECTED.

MIGRATION, UNINSTALL / REINSTALL of LicenseServer

IMPORTANT NOTE:

On first start, the LicenseServer/LicenceService creates a LicenseServer .dat file in the installation directory. From now on this file and the attached dongle (S9375) are linked together. To move the ‘master’ (Server) dongle to another PC, you MUST follow steps laid out in the MIGRATION section LicenceServer.pdf manual. This can be found in C:/LicenseServer/.

OTHER INFORMATION

Instructions on how to use Checkout dongles and troubleshooting can be read in the LicenceCentre.pdf . This document can be found in the installation folder of RIEGL LicenceCentre.
