How to enable SMB 1.0 on Windows

Older scanners use SMB 1.0 for network file sharing. This article describes how to enable it in Windows.

In around 2014, Microsoft began deprecating the SMBv1 protocol due to security concerns. It was used in Network Discovery, and it required when using older RIEGL VZ scanners (e.g. VZ-400) over a network connection.

Before you can communicate with these scanners using Windows 10 or 11, you need to enable SMB 1.0. Before doing so, read the information here, which describes the security risks associated with using SMBv1.

Open the tool "Turn Windows features on and off":

Scroll down the list to "SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support", expand it, and tick "SMB 1.0/CIFS Client" and "SMB 1.0/CIFS Server":

Restart the Windows machine, and then try to perform the task again.
