How to batch rotate images for use in RiSCAN PRO
Sometimes after editing images outside of RiSCAN PRO, they are incorrectly rotated. This article describes how to fix this problem.
Sometimes the camera settings were not adjusted correctly during data capture, and the images need to be fixed in post-processing, e.g. to adjust the exposure.
However, images captured by the scanner-mounted camera get incorrectly rotated when edited outside of RiSCAN PRO, due to inconsistencies in how the "rotated" attribute in the exif data is handled.
IrfanView can be used to correct this. It can be downloaded from https://www.irfanview.com/
Once installed, navigate to the folder that contains the incorrectly rotated images.
Make a backup copy of the images before you start.
Once you have backed up the images, right-click the folder, and from the context menu, choose "Browse with IrfanView"
Select the images that you want to adjust. Note: be sure to select the full resolution images, and not the low res thumbnail images - usually, the full res images are displayed "vertically":
Right-click the selection, and choose "Start batch dialog with selected files":
The Batch conversion dialog opens. The images are displayed, and you can see a list in the lower right area of the images that were selected.
Click the "Options" button:
Ensure the "Reset EXIF orientation tag" setting is NOT checked:
Click the "Advanced" button (tick the "Use advanced options" checkbox is the button is disabled):
Check the settings match the screenshot below:
Click the button "Use current ("Look in") folder to tell the program to output the adjusted images into the same folder as the (about to be overwritten) originals - as long as you have a backup copy of the images, you can always replace the modified images with the backup copies - and click "Start Batch":
When the tool has finished, close it and go to RiSCAN PRO and colour the scan again with the freshly adjusted images.
